Aphelandra Squarrosa Dania 'Zebra'
  • Light: Bright indirect. South facing exposure is best, ideally within 2ft of the window but in a spot protected from any direct sun rays.
  • Soil: Should be able to retain some water but also have the ability to drain fairly well.
  • Water: High. Keep the soil slightly moist at all times but not soggy or wet (see our recommended guidelines below). When watering, always water thoroughly until water comes out of the bottom of the drainage holes. Allow excess water to drain to avoid root rot. Use mineral-free distilled or rain water (reverse osmosis filters also work!)
    • Growing season (spring & summer) → Let the first 1 to 2 inches dry between drinks
    • Dormant season (fall & winter) → Let the first 2 to 3 inches dry between drinks
  • Humidity: High. We recommend placing this babe near a humidifier, giving it regular mistings, or placing it on a pebble tray filled with water to keep the humidity high.
  • Pet & tiny human friendly: Yes
  • Pro-tip: Flowers usually appear in Autumn and last around 6 weeks. Dead flowers should be removed after they've finished blooming and once the blooming period is over, you should prune this baby back dramatically (at least 2 leaves down) to keep it from getting leggy. Regular feeding during active growing season and warmth during winter (minimum of 55 degrees) are essentials for the long-term health and success of this bodacious beauty. Sudden leaf loss is likely due to extreme dryness at the roots but it can also be due to cold air, too much sun, and/or draughts.
